Carnival, Brooklyn

Officially, it’s called “The Labor Day Parade”, known colloquially as “West Indian Day Parade”.  But those  who breathe the life of it call it “Carnival”: Trinidad’s namesake.  This is not an event; it is an astounding experience:  a massive impromptu river of people will randomly flood into the streets by scores of thousands  throughout the day.  Adornment is of an elegance matched only by the scale of its theatricality.  If you have missed this, you have missed life itself.
