Tired Man On Wall Bench, Roma, 6_14_98

Italy

Italy has my heart like no other place, including my own country, the USA.  Rome is my city of the world.  You haven’t eaten food until you eat there.  The people are fiercely and uniquely self-expressive.  Family is as important to them as happiness itself.  Rome’s ancient culture was never “lost” - it has been continuously inhabited for over three milennia and they live shoulder-to-shoulder with antiquity every day, and they have the reverence for it to match.  I am always homesick for it.  Just as with unrequitted love, I think of it every single day; I yearn to be there all the time.
